Credit Cards with SMS Alert in every purchase/transaction
Main Post:
Hello! I just want to know what credit cards does have a sms alert feature in every transaction. Though I have few cards already with that but I might only consider CC's in the future that sends notification in all of my purchases for security reasons.
Please comment below bank CCs that you have with that feature specially those cards that aren't so popular. TIA.
Top Comment: Citibank Simplicity+ sends an alert for every transaction, regardless of amount.
Is Credit Alert worth it?
Main Post:
Hello all,
I have a feeling I know the answer already however I thought I would ask! This year has been a giant blunder with my credit, as my separation has caused a shit storm with missed payments (whole other story). I figured it wouldn’t hurt to agree to the Credit Alert, and then cancel before the free month is over. Anyway, I forgot to cancel.
Is this just a money scam? Is this service going to be helpful to me in monitoring my credit score and such? It looks like they only pulled from Equifax for the credit score.

Check your bank if they offer free credit monitoring and i think capital one has a free credit monitoring app
Cons of a fraud alert?
Main Post:
Hi,
I feel pretty dumb but I got roped into one of those SSA scams this morning. They called saying my SSN was suspended because of fraudulent activity and it was incredibly believable. I did realize it was a scam about a minute in, but I’d given them my first and last name as well as the last 4 digits of my SSN. So my two questions essentially are
- is there a lot they can do with that?
- I’m thinking of putting a fraud alert on my credit but am reluctant to do it in case it slows down processes and is a general hassle to me for a year after. I’ll be moving away from college soon and probably want to open new accounts etc. is it worth doing?
Thank you!

There's not a whole lot you can do with just the last 4 digits, and that information is probably floating around the dark web anyway at this point.
I have opened 3 credit cards and joined a credit union since adding fraud alerts to my credit reports. It does slow things down somewhat since they will conduct phone verification or request that you upload proof of ID (or both).
I consider the additional security to be useful and not as much of a hassle as dealing with lifting credit freezes. Legally speaking, a fraud alert doesn't obligate a bank to do anything, but every bank I've dealt with has taken some additional steps to verify my identity. It's in the bank's best interest to verify your identity because the bank doesn't want to lose thousands of dollars due to fraud.
Fraud Alert on Credit Report
Main Post:
My girlfriend and I are in the process of signing for our first apartment. She has a fraud alert on her credit report that is stopping us from proceeding with the lease. We have no idea why the alert is there. What is the most efficient way of handling this situation?

Credit alert says someone has opened or tried to open credit using my SSN
Main Post:
I have a Capital One credit card that includes CreditWise which tries to watch for credit fraud. I received an alert from CreditWise over the weekend that someone (it includes their name and address) opened or tried to open credit in my name (it does not say where) back in September. The alert says it was reported by Experian.
So I downloaded credit reports from all 3 big credit bureaus for myself and my wife and there is nothing unusual on there. No bogus accounts and no hard credit pulls. There are a few soft pulls but that's normal (I think). I also put a credit freeze (Even though the horse is already out of the barn) on all 3 credit bureaus plus Innovis for myself and my wife.
Other than keeping an eye on the credit reports and my credit score is there anything else I should do? Thanks in advance.

That's about it. Don't click on email links from virus-basket.biz.ru, and you're already doing everything else correctly.
The alert could honestly have been just someone fat fingering their own social security number and accidentally typing yours.
With a credit freeze and checking one of the three every 4-6 months you should be fine.
If you placed an initial 90 day fraud alert on your credit report after the Equifax hack, it's probably expiring soon.
Main Post:
If you do nothing else, place an initial 90 day fraud alert on your file. This is free and will require lenders to contact you if someone (including yourself) tries to apply for credit. Government info. You only have to do this with one bureau in order for the alert to be placed on all three, and it should take less than 5 minutes.
Initially from this thread.

This is my life now...
Is there a way to set this up to be reposted every 90 days?
is this what credit fraud alert amounts to
Main Post:
Ever since the Equifax scandal, my partner and I signed up for experian credit fraud alert (not freezing credit).
We recently signed up for an amex card. typically in the past, credit cards would either be instantly approved or denied on the spot online. instead, this time amex contacted us to double check that we indeed wanted to open the card before actually sending it to us.
Was that extra step that amex took to double check our intent to open a card what the whole "credit fraud alert" amounts to? Does the credit fraud alert only force the company who owns the product to contact the holder of the SSN? I was under the impression that it was the credit bureau had to notify us every time someone does a hard check on our credit - and we never received any notification/contact from our credit bureau on our attempt to open an amex card.
Just trying to educate myself and any others on PF on what "credit fraud alert" really means and how it actually works and helps (if at all). any help/insight is much appreciated, thank you!

That is how it is supposed to work, yes. The fraud alert notifies the potential credit grantor (in this case, Amex), to verify your identification before extending credit in your name.
Any downside to registering credit alert?
Main Post:
I received 2 CC in the mail that I did not apply for. I've already contacted the issuers and don't see any other inquiries on my bureau file, and although various companies tell you to monitor your file (after all, they want to sell you services for this purpose), why not just register a credit alert with TU and Equifax?
Top Comment:
I am a mortgage broker and the reason against it would be annoyance when you are trying to get credit. Often people will register and forget they have. They may change their phone number and address and forget to update the credit bureau companies.
This causes delays when you are actually trying to get credit. If you have a legitimate concern for your credit and identity theft, then I would recommend getting one setup.
Meaning of `Credit Alert`on TransUnion credit reports
Main Post:
Received an email today from TransUnion notifying me that there was a new credit alert on my account. I am not sure what those are, so I log in and see below. Not sure if I need to do anything.
I used to have a home internet with Virgin, but it was cancelled around 1.5 months ago and modem was returned around a month ago. I don`t see any charges on my CC from Virgin or anything like that. Do I need to worry? I tried googling what "credit alert" means, but I only get information about "fraud alert" instead.
Top Comment: It means that there has been a change to your credit report. In this case new trade showed that virgin has reported that you have an account with them. You should check if the status if open or closed since you cancelled it.
